The Finally Induction Light Bulb


Light bulbs are becoming a gold rush. A venture-backed startup has announced an under-$10 incandescent replacement light bulb based on induction technology.

The Finally Light Bulb Company uncloaked today. It was featured in The New York Times yesterday and in many other news outlets today. Its 60W-replacement, 800-lumen bulb, as you can see, looks almost exactly like a traditional A19 incandescent. Various outlets say that the target price of the Finally Acandescent will be $7.99 when it becomes available this summer -- but when you go to the company's pre-order page, it says you'll pay $9.99.


Induction

Ron Lenk's induction primer offers some background on how the technology works. He concludes: "I should mention that I've seen an induction lamp configured to resemble an A19 (vaguely). It was this big honking thing that must have weighed a pound, and had a huge bulge in the middle where the coil was."


Finally does seem to have accomplished the downsizing of induction technology to fit comfortably into an A19 envelope -- not a trivial accomplishment. It hired senior scientists from Osram Sylvania and GE to get this done. The bulb's weight is not stated, but it looks like it might mass less than a typical LED-based bulb.


Spectrum

Finally's website talks in general terms about the warm, incandescent-like light the bulb produces, yet the spec page lists its CRI as only 83. I didn't see any representation of the bulb's spectrum on the Finally site or elsewhere. Most of the induction spectra I found online, such as this one, relate to plant-growing lights (and most of those are directed at cannabis production). If Finally's spectrum is anywhere near as spiky as some of these, it's understandable that its color rendering will not be exactly incandescent-like.


Mercury

The Finally bulb contains a small amount of mercury in solid form, according to the NYT coverage, which goes on to say that the amount is so tiny the bulb can be disposed of in landfills. However, the Lighting Facts label on the Finally site reads "Contains Mercury. For more on clean up and safe disposal see epa.gov/cfl."


To be fair, the Lighting Facts rules may require that disclaimer unless the amount of mercury is exactly zero. Nevertheless, the label won't be a comfort to the average environmentally conscious consumer.


Funding

Finally has taken in $19 million from venture capitalists, according to the NYT. The founder has no prior experience in the lighting or electronics industries (though some of the staffers obviously do). Our own Ed Rodriguez, no stranger to venture funding over a long career, had this perspective on the gold-rush mentality in evidence in the light-bulb business today:



[It is] interesting that there is so much investor money out there looking for the "next big thing." What a difference from a few decades ago when I was first raising some investor money. Investors asked a hundred tough questions, wanted to see some revenue, wanted to talk to potential customers etc. -- and almost never invested in individuals without a quantifiable significant achievement or corporate track record as manager or executive in the industry involved.

Apple Acquires Micro-LED Display Maker LuxVue


Apple has acquired LuxVue Technology, a startup company that focuses on making low power micro-LED based displays in the consumer market, according to a TechCrunch report.


TechCrunch sources close to the transaction revealed LuxVue has raised US$ 43 million in funding from Kleiner Perkins, iD Ventures America and others.


Apple has declined to confirm the acquisition, but its actions have generated speculation that LuxVue’s technology might be applied in future iWatches, according to a Mashable report.


Quoting John Doerr, a LuxVue partner at venture-capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers presentation at Techcrunch Disrupt on Sept. 11, 2013, the Mashable report highlighted the micro-LEDs venture from using white light to filter unwanted colors.


"Instead of having a bright white light and then filtering away the colors you don't want, at every pixel, it puts down two red, two green, two blue directly emissive LEDs," said Doerr. "This will deliver nine times better brightness … with lower battery requirements."


The claim that the micro-LEDs will be brighter, while consuming less energy is supported by another report by Apple Patently that notes several patents filed by LuxVue involve sapphire on GaN technology. The incorporation of sapphire in display backlight could improve brightness significantly, while lowering energy consumption.


Doerr also commented the micro-LED display could be applied on curved substrates, and would be ideal for a smartwatch maker. The patent for the technology was filed in December 2012 for a special method of "forming an array of micro LEDs for transfer to a receiving substrate.”


LuxVue Technology relation with Apple appears to be long established, with its current Vice President of Technology Kapil Sakariya being a former Apple engineer. Sakariya joined LuxVue in 2011.

Monday Roundup: Leveraging Haitz


This week: swapping out high-bay LEDs for induction, taking advantage of Haitz's Law to replace street lights, and horticultural LEDs on Mars.


Growing veggies in a shipping container in Antarctica

Well, it's not really Mars, but it's one of the places on Earth that comes kind of close -- dry and cold. The atmosphere is way too thick, though.

The German space agency DLR staffs an Antarctic station year-round. The researchers there are working on a three-year contract with the horticultural lighting company Heliospecra to grow food in a shipping container at the bottom of the world. Heliospectra has developed "light recipes" for growing such things as coriander, dill, parsley, and wheat under blue and red LED light.


Conditions in the Antarctic may be somewhat Mars-like, but there's another kind of simulation going on. When DLR's nine investigators spend the nine-month winter eating food grown in the shipping container, conditions are lot like the inside of a spacecraft. The staff in residence is about the same size as a crew that might undertake a voyage to Mars. Resupply to Antarctica during the winter is pretty much nonexistent, just as it would be to a spaceship on the way to our neighboring planet.


Crowdfunding for SSL startups

E2 Lighting International of Hayward, Calif., is one of four "Main Street" businesses seeking debt financing through a new crowdsourcing program offered by Breakaway Funding of Sausalito, Calif. Breakaway is developing a "community-based crowdfunding platform" to bring mostly accredited investors -- high-net-worth individuals -- together with capital-hungry companies with annual revenue of $1 million to $20 million.


The details of what E2 Lighting will seek are not yet up on the Breakaway site: how much capital the company is seeking, the minimum investment per participant, and whether the deal is open only to "sophisticated" investors or to any California resident.


We have written about funding SSL companies before. This crowdfunding initiative will be one to watch.


Swappng out high-bay LEDs in favor of induction

We have heard plenty of success stories of LED-based lighting replacing commercial or industrial fluorescent, metal halide, of sodium lights. At three Tennessee steel mills, LEDs were tried and failed to make the grade. They are being replaced with EverLast induction lighting.


The circumstances are a little bit special at the steel mills of Gerdau in Knoxville, Tenn. "The ceilings in the plant are about 140-160 degrees [Fahrenheit] and the lens on the LED fixtures began to melt off," a Gerdau spokesman said in an EverLast press release. "We also have a lot of steel dust that floats in our air... The weight of the compiled dust ultimately unhinged each fixture... sending it crashing to [the] floor."


Replacing street lights by Haitz's Law

The city of St. Cloud, Minn., has what may be a better idea on how to implement a program to upgrade its streetlights to SSL. It is replacing one-fifth of its street lights each year for five years. The phased project will be easier to pay for than a "big bang" would. But the real impetus for this approach is to reap the benefits of Haitz's Law, which says that LEDs drop in price by a factor of 10 every decade. St. Cloud expects each year's crop of replacements to perform better and to be cheaper than the last.


Does this approach make financial sense? I would love to see the city's spreadsheets. In the first year, it is leaving on the table four-fifths of the energy and maintenance savings it would have if it replaced all the lights at once. A year later, it would leave three-fifths, then two-fifths, and then one-fifth. Does the Haitz improvement compensate for those losses? Anybody want to take a stab at that calculation?

Rubicon Technology, Inc. Reports First Quarter 2014 Results of Operations


Rubicon Technology, Inc., a provider of sapphire substrates and products to the LED, semiconductor, and optical industries, today reported financial results for its first quarter ended March 31, 2014.


The Company reported first quarter revenue of $14.3 million as compared with $11.5 million in the prior quarter. The general lighting segment of the LED market continued to strengthen in the first quarter as adoption of this disruptive technology continues to gain momentum. Overall LED growth in the quarter was tempered by seasonality associated with the backlighting market. Demand from this market is typically lower at the beginning of the year. As a result, overall demand in the first quarter was similar to the prior quarter and sapphire pricing, therefore, remained fairly consistent with the previous quarter.


The Company reported progress in growing the wafer side of its business. They received their first production order for their recently introduced patterned sapphire substrates which will be delivered in the second quarter. They also received their first production order of four-inch polished wafers which started in the latter part of the first quarter.


Raja Parvez, President and CEO of Rubicon, commented, “Patterned sapphire substrates (“PSS”) and polished wafers are an important part of our strategy and I am pleased with the sales progress we made in the quarter.”


However, costs in the wafering operations were high in the quarter resulting in an increase in pre-tax loss from $9.1 million in the fourth quarter to $10.9 million in the first quarter. Wafer costs were higher than normal due to the large number of PSS samples produced and the cost of establishing a four-inch polishing line. In addition, due to the increased number of wafers in inventory at the end of the period and wafer costs exceeding market price, there was a $1.1 million adjustment to align wafer inventory to market value.


William Weissman, Rubicon’s CFO, commented, “Idle plant and development costs at our wafering facility are the main cause of our negative margins. However, utilization will be improving with the recent sales activity and we expect wafer costs to come down over the course of this year as we move from development to production.”


The Company’s net loss in the first quarter was $0.43 per share. The Company established a tax valuation allowance in the fourth quarter and consequently does not currently record a tax benefit on its Statements of Operations.

Cree adds floodlights to its LED lineup




Cree, the upstart LED lighting manufacturer headquartered in North Carolina, is again expanding its portfolio of bargain LED bulbs. The company's latest offering is a new line of 90-watt replacement PAR38 bulbs designed with spot, flood, and outdoor lighting applications in mind. The new LEDs will offer two beam angle options, output 1,500 lumens from 18 watts of power usage, and retail for $24.97 at Home Depot.
