Apple’s Aluminum Supply Chain Revolution Hard to Replicate in Sapphire Industry


Will Apple’s mobile device demands revolutionize the sapphire supply chain in the same way as the aluminum industry 10 years ago? Perhaps not, according to a Verge article.


Apple’s demands for affordable unibody aluminum encased laptops, which included MacBook Air and later MacBook and MacBook Pro laptop drove down aluminum manufacturing costs. By introducing aluminum into consumer electronic products and changing manufacturing methods of using a single block of aluminum, the company “made aluminum cool again.”


However, the Cupertino company’s success in the aluminum industry will be difficult to replicate in the sapphire industry mainly because of the material’s physical properties and technology maturation. The process for making sapphire window for instance is “already mature and is unlikely to undergo the kind of revolution that led to cheap aluminum,” Verge quoted Harvard physicist Frans Spaepen saying.


Spaepen’s opinion is backed by high-end smartphone maker Vertu’s head of design Hutch Hutchison. Hutchison highlighted sapphire’s robust properties, which includes highly scratch-resistant and toughness also makes it very difficult to work with. The material can only be cut, grinded and polished using diamond tools, which could raise manufacturing costs. Nokia’s head of colors and materials, Joeske Schellen notes incorporating sapphire into smartphone displays would cost 10 times as much than using Corning Gorilla Glass. Even Vertu, which has more than 15 years of experience making sapphire glass cover smartphones, charges a hefty US$ 5,740 for its 4.7 inch Constellation phone.


Sapphire’s rigid and brittle nature also makes it less malleable than aluminum. HTC former Chief Designer Scott Coyle pointed out during sapphire and ceramic material drop-tests conducted by HTC, “they snap and break into a gazillion pieces."


So what to make out of Apple’s deal with GT Advanced Technologies (GTAT) in November 2013? The set up of the Arizona sapphire manufacturing plant merely reflects Apple’s changing manufacturing policy of focusing on in-house manufacturing and spending less on out-sourcing. The change has been consistent with Apple manufacturing strategies observations by analyst Horace Dediu in 2011 that shows the manufacturer is spending more on acquiring equipment, tools and machinery to make its own devices. Owning the factory is just the next step in Apple’s business strategy, and by mowing down outsourcing there will be few trickle-down benefits for competitors. In addition, the exclusive deal signed with GTAT will also make it difficult for competitors aside from Samsung to replicate.


In the meantime, the new sapphire plant is more likely to be supplying sapphire for home buttons and camera lenses. It is unlikely sapphire yield rates can be vamped up quick enough to meet smartwatch and wearable device demands this year, analyzed material scientists and experts.

3 From Cree


Cree had a flurry of recent announcements: a versatile T8 replacement, a PAR38 lamp, and the nationwide expansion of distribution for its high-CRI incandescent replacement bulbs.


T8 LED tube

Cree's T8 fluorescent replacement claims plug-in compatibility with more than 90% of the electronic ballasts out there, "including instant start, programmed start, rapid start, and dimmable fluorescent ballasts." Its compatibility seems to be broader than that of its obvious head-to-head competitor, the Philips InstantFit introduced in January. The latter tube is said to be compatible with high-frequency electronic balasts; dimming is not mentioned.

This table compares the two offerings at a high level. Besides ballast compatibility, the major distinctions are CRI and level of light output. Philips (this site's sponsor) has a slight edge in efficacy. Though Cree doesn't mention the angle at which its T8's light is distributed, it does make the point that its oval shape allows a small amount of light to go upward, which could be important in installations with reflective fixtures.


The T8 features Cree's TrueWhite technology, with red and yellow LEDs in the mix boosting the CRI. We'll have to see whether the mainstream businesses in which fluorescent T8s are now installed will care about the improved color rendering that Cree offers. Certainly the poor color of traditional fluorescents has been one of the major complaints about the technology for the last 70 years.

PAR38

Cree's replacement for a 90-Watt incandescent PAR38 bulb is now available in Home Depot stores and online for $25. Cree claims this is cheaper than most competitors' offerings, and that seems to be the case. Bulbs by LSG, TCP, MSI, Toshiba, and others are showing up from $32.50 into the $50s.


The Cree bulb produces 3,000K light in 27° or 47° beam angles. It puts out 1,500 lm for 18 Watts of power in (83 lm/W). Its claimed lifetime is 25,000 hours. The bulb is dimmable and rated for wet (not merely damp) environments. Like all of Cree's consumer-level products, it is warranteed for 10 years.

High-CRI TW bulbs go nationwide

Something else you'll be able to pick up at Home Depot anywhere in the US is Cree's 94-CRI bulbs, which were introduced first to the California market. Here is CNET's review.


When the 40W and 60W replacement bulbs debuted in California in September, they listed for $18 and $20, respectively. They now cost $14 and $16.


Cree's "TW" (for TrueWhite) bulbs were the first to meet the California Energy Commission's voluntary spec and qualify for energy-company rebates in that state. I don't know of any other product that has qualified in the interim. If you do, please share in the comments.

Osram Releases Low-profile Synios E4014 LEDs


The low-profile rectangular shape of the new Synios E4014 from Osram Opto Semiconductors enables the light from this LED to be injected into light guides so that a wide range of design ideas can turned into reality. These mid-power light emitting diodes also have an impressively robust plastic package, a particularly uniform distribution of light and an excellent price performance ratio. The LEDs are intended primarily for visually enhancing "white goods" and for lighting systems in vehicles and displays.











Low-profile shape to meet tough design demands: the new Synios E4014. (Osram)

The extremely low height of the Synios of only 0.57 mm and its footprint of 4 mm x 1.4 mm provide the ideal basis for low-profile elongated luminaire and lighting designs – such as ones for backlighting displays. The LEDs are not equipped with a lens so they can easily be used for injecting light into light guides. The new E4014 opens up a whole range of design-oriented lighting solutions, such as integration in the glass shelving in refrigerators and other white goods, car interior lighting, and strip lighting on the floors of buses and trains.


"Refrigerators and washing machines are not exactly renowned for their exciting designs. Where each of the two light emitting diodes is used depends on the requirements of the particular application. If brightness and color fidelity are needed then Synios at 41 lm and a color rendering index (CRI) of 80 is the right choice. If brightness is not as important then the Topled with 7.3 lm at 20 mA is ideal.


The color temperatures of Synios are between 4000 and 5000 K and can therefore be tailored perfectly to the particular application. The robust plastic package is one of the benefits of the new Synios in addition to the extremely uniform distribution of light, high efficiency, excellent flexibility and long life of around 50,000 hours. In view of the intended applications, the ESD stability is 5 kilovolts (kV).
