Samsung Display aims to dominate the OLED display smartphone market with its OLED A3 fab expansion, according to a report by Business Korea.
The company’s new OLED production line will be mainly focused on making OLEDs for the wearable device market, as the market competition intensifies with Apple’s introduction of OLED into smartwatches. LG’s expanding OLED manufacturing capacity with the launch of 8th generation production lines is also a driving factor behind Samsung Display’s decision.
“Samsung Electronics is expanding its market share mainly with high-end smartphones, but the pace is slow because of market saturation,” the report quoted Kim Dong-won, a Hyundai Securities Analyst saying. “To achieve a breakthrough, the company is expected to change the design of new smartphones in an innovative manner, with flexible OLED displays.” This indicates that Samsung’s new smartphones are likely to feature OLED screens manufactured at the A3 plant.
The report project Samsung’s new A3 plant will be fully operational by November or December 2014 earliest, and Samsung Display will take at least six months to install and run the equipment after orders are placed in April. Mass production of OLED panels will not begin till January or February 2015. For more information please see:
